There studies out there that suggest
we're all born with the genetic memories. We move through
time carrying the experiences and cultures of our ancestors.
I wonder just how much that is true. I started my love
affair for Royal Copenhagen Plates when I was thirteen. I
always have had a favorable like for the Royal Copenhagen
blue and Lapis blue. I bought my first three plates from a
store dealer, 1940's plates. I was so excited I went to my
English Grandmother who was married to my Danish
grandfather, She shamed me into taking them back to the
dealer but I never forgot the feel of the relief on the
plates and shading of the blue and that they were hand
painted by a painter in Denmark. I would be pulled to them
and I longed for the plates. I started collecting them in
college. I didn't have the money even at the 1970's prices
to collect them as fast as I wanted. I bought my second
plate in Iceland. I can name the store, the price, story,
and location of each plate. I collected by the decade and
didn't leave the decade until I had all ten. Then I would
start the next decade. I bought my last plate in 2000. "THE"
1908 plate. The Holly Grail of my collection. I did collect
every plate without online shopping until the last plate
from Henrik. I always wanted to see and walk the streets of
the home land of my Great Grandparents and Grandfather. I
went in 2006 and cried as I was landing. I did the research
of each plate location and made a plan to get to each plate
location. Of course the Royal Copenhagen store and the
factory. A highlight of that trip was to paint on a plate
and meet some of the artists. I was even asked to move over
and paint for them- that would be a dream to come true. I
lived with the Royal Copenhagen Plates hugging me everyday
for over 40 years.
